Following on from the US MGM-released Blu-ray of Dan O Bannon's now classic Return of the Living Dead a couple of years ago (which came bundled with a DVD of the same, and was available in either DVD-style casing or Blu-ray-style) Second Sight are putting the film out across UK shores in April. The US disc is a good one featuring two commentary tracks and about an hour's worth of other extras alongside a full HD transfer (on the Blu-ray of course) apparently limited a little by the source material (perhaps we will see when the UK version arrives), combined with DTS HD MA/Dolby 2-channel mono audio track options. The really snazzy thing is that it comes packed in a steel-book coupled with a production notes booklet - very nice.
Being a movie I love the US release is something I already own, though this new one looks like a superior package browsing the extras: The two-hour 'More Brains" documentary, "The Origins of Return Of The Living Dead" with John A. Russo, "Party Time" with music consultant Steve Pross and 45 Grave singer Dinah Cancer, and "The FX of The Living Dead" with production designer William Stout and FX make-up artists William Munns and Tony Gardner. It's labelled as a 'Special Edition', though the term is so over-used these days I'll believe what I see when I see it. No news on transfer details yet at the company's website, but here's a link nonetheless (let's hope, if they do a good job with this one, the first two sequels might be considered for acquisition for the first time on Blu). Now UK fans have no excuse to carboot those old DVDs...
